Career Fair

Oregon Tradeswomen Inc is a great organization with terrific outreach. They are dedicated to exposing and inspiring women to pursue the skilled trades through education, mentorship and leadership. Employers are anxious to hire qualified skilled tradeswomen and apprenticeship programs just can’t turn out female graduates fast enough. OTI hosts pre-apprenticship classes, networking events, and leadership training. They can help women identify what apprenticeship programs they are interested in and help them with the application process. Skilled tradeswomen can qualify for family wage jobs with good benefits without taking on the burden of college debt.

Innovation Academy May 18, 2013

This looks like it will be really fun and would be a great follow-up to anyone who participated in i-Urban and wants to do more:

On Saturday, May 18, from 2-5pm, Tech for Tomorrow, in partnership with SUN and Ideal Portland, will be launching an Innovation Academy at Franklin High School.

The Innovation Academy is bringing together students, teachers, and working professionals from the Northwest’s technology industries to empower students with new skills sets of the digital age.

Teams will work collaboratively to build software applications and other technology-based solutions that solve real world problems that exist within our community. The solutions that will emerge from these teams will be known as “Innovation for the Common Good.”

All students, teachers and technology industry professionals are welcome to participate in the launch event. Once teams have been formed and projects are begun, their solutions will be demonstrated in a large community celebration when the school year resumes next fall.

Franklin High School is located at 5405 SE Woodward St  Portland, OR 97206.

Technology Awareness Program University of Arkansas July 14-19 2013

Technology Awareness Program is a program of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Arkansas Walton College of Business. This camp really focuses on technology and business and their intersection. If you are interested in learning about the technology that is critical to business, like accounting, finance and computer information systems, you’ll want to apply for this camp. The camp brings 25 minority and women onto the campus of University of Arkansas to take classes taught by university professors, meet business and government professionals, and learn about the business world. Students work in teams on a challenge presentation.

  • Camp runs July 14-19
  • The camp is free. Including room and board, instruction and materials. There is conflicting information on the website with regards to transportation. The web page says that round-trip plane ticket is included. The FAQ’s state that the family is responsible for transportation. I’ve sent an email to ask for clarification.
  • Applicants must be minority or majority women who will be starting their junior or senior year in 2013
  • Applications (which include a brief teacher or counselor recommendation and a copy of your transcript) are due May 3, so get going!

Register before May 20 for the 2013 Summer Experience in Science and Engineering for Youth (SESEY) at Oregon State University. The camp is hosted by the School of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering but a broad overview of the sciences at the school is provided.

For the bargain price of $200, students live on campus, work with graduate students on a science project and tour the school. A highlight for my daughter who attended for two years was holding Linus Pauling’s Nobel Prize. Register by May 20, 2013. Camp runs July 14-19, 2013.

Call for speakers at 2013 Adolescent Sexuality Conference

I don’t know about you,  but my house is FULL of teens with opinions and things to say about sex (most of which end up with someone pulling a condom from his or her wallet just to try and make me blush).

Now I can encourage them to apply for a chance to be a presenter at the Adolescent Sexuality Conference in Seaside, Oregon this spring.  Oregon Teen Pregnancy Task Force is looking for two youth (under 19) who live in Oregon to address attendees  April 22 & 23, 2013.  The topic is “What I would like Everyone to Know About Teens and Sexual Health”.  Speeches can be submitted in written or video format and must not be longer than 5 minutes.  Winners will receive free conference registration as well as lodging and meals during the event in Seaside, Oregon. Deadline to submit your speech is February 20, 2013.

My Voice Music Summer Rock Camps! | My Voice Music

Very excited to learn about this camp that was featured on today’s Oregon Live. My Voice Music Summer Rock and Roll Camp is coming starting July 30 and youth 12-15 can attend, free. Thanks to generous support from donors, including the Portland Timbers Community Fund, students pay “what you can afford” and if you can’t afford anything, you can still attend.

Three sessions start July 30. All are 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Sound Roots School of Music, 3954 N Williams in Portland.

  • July 30 – August 3
  • August 13 – 17
  • August 27 – 31

The mission of the organization is to reach out to at-risk youth and inspire them through music. You don’t need to have an instrument or even know how to play, just a desire to use music and poetry to express themselves.

file000728022063 Aside

I had a hard time posting this opportunity, not because I don’t think its an excellent one, but because I know there will probably be backlash at my house. And I have a bad habit of trying to avoid conflict.

You see, I have a boy who wants to be a fire fighter.  REALLY wants to be a fire fighter, and it seems like every time he tells anyone he gets this response: “Its really hard to become a fire fighter”. Or “very few people ever get to be fire fighter” or “that is the most competitive job out there” or “you better have a back up plan”.  I wouldn’t stand for it if someone told my daughter she’d better have a back-up plan if she hopes to be an engineer.

So now you understand the sore point at our house.

Anyhow, Fire Camp is a tree-day training camp for girls only, ages 16-19 .  Put on by the Portland Fire and Rescue Bureau, the dates are June 22-24.  This non-residential camp will be held at their training facility in NE Portland. Applications are accepted through May 23rd and can be submitted electronically or mailed in.  Download aFire Camp flyer and share it with your friends.  I think it sounds really fun, and with our late arriving Portland Summers, it shouldn’t even be too hot at the end of June.

Sometimes things get a little tense around my house because the boys don’t like that I keep finding great things for girls-only but nothing just for boys.

While I fully support activities that concentrate on girls to try and get them involved with fields that they do not traditionally aspire too, I think the boys have a pretty valid point. There are not anywhere near as many free opportunities for boys only, in any category including those that are traditionally male dominated or female dominated.

Its a rich discussion and we have it a lot and I haven’t every really come up with a satifactory answer.

Here is a favorite gender-stereotype busting clip from our old favorite CD, Free to Be You and Me.

The only solution we’ve come up with is my youngest’s idea to have a camp for crafts and home economics–cooking, sewing, knitting etc– for boys only. If we ever get it off the ground, you can bet you will find it on Find Tomorrow Today.
