Career Fair

Oregon Tradeswomen Inc is a great organization with terrific outreach. They are dedicated to exposing and inspiring women to pursue the skilled trades through education, mentorship and leadership. Employers are anxious to hire qualified skilled tradeswomen and apprenticeship programs just can’t turn out female graduates fast enough. OTI hosts pre-apprenticship classes, networking events, and leadership training. They can help women identify what apprenticeship programs they are interested in and help them with the application process. Skilled tradeswomen can qualify for family wage jobs with good benefits without taking on the burden of college debt.

Sign up now for another fun filled (AND free–with food and goodies!) I-Urban Teen Tech summit. Register online. IUrban aims to introduce minority students to high technology — a  world in which minorities are traditionally underrepresented. There are technology leaders there to hear from YOU. They want to know how you use their products and what ideas you have for the future. Parents are invited to attend too.

2nd Annual Rob Ingram Youth Summit Against Violence

We, the Multnomah Youth Commission, established the Youth Against Violence Committee (YAV) in 2011, in response to the growing violence directed towards young people. We are currently focused on Anti-Gay and Gender, Cyberbullying, Gang, Home, Police, School (Bullying) and Sexual/ Dating Violence, as well as Restorative Justice. As the official youth policy body for Multnomah County and the City of Portland, we will not tolerate these acts, which create a hostile and unsafe environment for all youth throughout our city and county.

This youth summit (21 and under) is being held on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at the Ambridge Event Center (1333 NE MLK Jr. Blvd) from 10:00am- 5:00pm. The first part of the summit is for youth only to caucus, build community, and develop action steps related to last year’s policy recommendations. The presence of invited policymakers and community leaders is requested in the afternoon to listen to youth’s stories of violence and engage young people in dialogue around how we can take steps together to reduce violence in our community.

We are providing:

1. On site licensed childcare to all young people with children (registration required)

2. Bus transportation to and from the summit from 14 different locations (see attachment)

3. Breakfast, lunch and snacks during the day

4. Custom made T-Shirts from local business Screw Loose Studios in N.PDX

5. Amazing raffle prizes with lots of chances to win.

6. Opportunities to learn, take action and STOP the violence

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED: IF you know of a YOUNG PERSON (NOT ADULT) who would be interested in attending please have them register online here.

Youth Summit Against Violence 2013

The goals of the summit are to…

  • Provide resources for youth to deal with violence they experienced and/or currently experience in their lives
  • Inform policymakers with the experiences youth face regarding violence and strengthen our youth-adult partnerships to implement our policy recommendations and actions.
  • Educate youth and adults about Our Bill of Rights: Children + Youth and the importance of its implementation into all decision making areas in the community
  • Bring diverse youth from across the region together to share ideas and experiences regarding violence and build a youth movement for social change

Currently, our formal partners include State Farm Insurance Youth Advisory Board, Multnomah County’s Office of Diversity and Equity, Department of County Human Services, STRYVE (Health Department), Defending Childhood Initiative, and the Local Public Safety Coordinating Council, City of Portland’s Office of Youth Violence Prevention, America’s Promise Alliance, Oregon Safe Schools and Communities Coalition, and Einstein Bagels.

Please pass this information on to all who would find it valuable.

Thanks for your support,

Abby’s Closet Gown Giveaway and Scholarship

Abby’s Closet, a Portland-based all-volunteer non-profit, does a couple of wonderful things. Their mission is “to inspire confidence and respect in high school women by providing free formal gowns for prom and other memorable events.” They give out free dresses and accessories to high school aged young women so they can have the prom that they dreamed about. The dresses are great quality and the service at the dress distribution event — according to girls that I know who have participated —  is kind, compassionate and FUN! They also offer a scholarship to one young women who they feel “embodies the spirit and mission of Abby’s Closet.” Although they started in Portland, organizers now contact all schools within 150 miles to make sure that young women know about the give away.

Abby’s Closet was founded by daughter/mother team Abby and Sally Egland when Abby was cleaning out her closet in preparation for her departure to the University of Oregon. Abby didn’t just donate her dress, she decided to round up a group of volunteers to collect donations to provide many girls with dresses. That project has morphed over the last 9 years and now thousands of girls have benefited from her idea. To really lift your spirits, view this wonderful Abby’s Closet slide show by Portland Monthly Magazine’s Mary Saunders (2009).

This year’s gown giveaway will take place March 16-17, 2013 at the Oregon Convention Center.  The only requirement is that girls show their high school ID. Girls arrive early in the day and are given a number and an approximate time that they will served in one of the comfortable “salons”. Adult helpers will assist girls in choosing the perfect gown. Girls will also be allowed to select one accessory to help complete the outfit.

“Dreams can come true” scholarship will be awarded to one young woman who plans to attend the 2013 Gown Giveaway. The $1000 scholarship is sponsored by T.J. Maxx.  The winner of the scholarship will also be given the opportunity to choose the first dress from among the selection.  Applications are due February 18.
